Are you using a Couples Travel Concierge ??

As a travel professional, I’m often asked why people should use a travel agent.  There are literally hundreds of answers to this question; today, we are going to talk about specifically why people would use a Couples Travel Concierge.  As a Couples Travel Concierge,

I help couples celebrate and embrace the special moments in life.  I believe every vacation should be a vacation experience – not just another trip away from home or time away from the office.  As a Couples Travel Concierge, I’m here to help you create your perfect vacation experience and start creating future memories!

I firmly believe you should be taking your perfect vacation – not the “picture perfect” vacation you see in brochures or on the internet.  Unfortunately your real life vacation won’t have Photoshop to make imperfections look perfect!  The last thing you want to happen is to show up on your honeymoon or landmark anniversary expecting that beachfront suite like you saw in the picture and find you have a view overlooking the roof next door, or worse.

When you start thinking about your next vacation, it is important to remember that it is “your” vacation.  It is not a vacation in a brochure, not a trip on the internet, not your friend’s trip, not your co-workers trip, and not anyone else’s vacation but yours!  Remember, it shouldn’t be a trip at all; it should be a vacation or travel experience!

Working with a professional travel concierge will insure your vacation experience meets your expectations.  Most couples want to have their trips planned to their exact specifications.  Many couples want special activities or events planned during their vacation.  How about that romantic dinner on the beach?   Or that private, personalized guided tour in your destination?  Are you not the “shuttle bus” kind of person – How about private transfers?  Perhaps you are a honeymoon couple or a landmark anniversary couple and want to be recognized as such during your honeymoon or anniversary trip.
Travel with a group can present some challenges and a professional travel concierge knows just how to hand them!  Are you traveling with a group of couples?  Would you like to have a private event just for your group?  Is this a special occasion – do you want gifts delivered for members of your group?  Do you want to make sure staterooms on the cruise ship are in close proximity?  (Balcony row, as one of my groups refers to it!) Do you want private transfers just for your group?
The vast majority of vacationers that return disappointed are disappointed because their experience did not meet their expectation.  A brochure and the internet cannot match expectation and experience.

Don’t let this happen to you!

Safe Travels,

How is your timing ??

As a professional travel agent and Couples Travel Concierge, one of the most commonly asked questions I get, is:

When the best time to book my travel?

There is no one single answer to that because it can vary significantly depending on the type of travel and the destination.  Let’s look at some different scenarios and see if I can shed some light on this for you.

Honeymoons:   The best time to start planning your honeymoon is 6-9 months prior to travel – possibly longer for some more exotic options!  Can it be booked in less time?  Sure!
However, keep in mind, the flights may be limited and higher priced (especially for popular destinations or destinations that do not have daily flight service), and the room type or even the resort you want may not be available for you.

Destination Weddings or Celebration Travel for a group:  9-12 months if you have a very specific date in mind.  Many resorts do not allow more than 1 or 2 weddings on any given day, and the venues sell out quickly.  Also, if you will have a number of guests traveling with you, we need to secure the room space well in advance to make sure we have space for everyone.
As for flights, those can only be booked at a maximum 9 – 10 months out (can be as low as 6 months for some destinations) but the flights can be added later.  The important thing is to secure the resort and the wedding day.

Cruise:  While it is true that you can book a cruise up until the week of sailing, this is not a good idea.  The myth of last minute “cheap” pricing is just that – a myth.  Booking at the last minute (considered within 30 days of sailing) basically gives you access to what staterooms are left – or what no one else wanted.  These are most often not desirable locations on the ship.  The best recommendation for pricing and the availability of the accommodations you want is 6 months prior to sailing.  If you are part of a group and want to organize a group cruise, you need to plan at least 9 months prior, preferably one year if itineraries are available.

River Cruise:  The best time to plan a river cruise is as soon as the idea enters your head, book one!  River Cruises are in high demand and sell out very quickly.  One year in advance is the average booking window.
I have several clients that have already booked for September of 2015!  Yes, 2015!!  Sadly, I had to disappoint another couple this week because they wanted to cruise this June and the earliest availability for their chosen itinerary and stateroom type is in October!

All-Inclusive Resorts:  Much like a honeymoon, the best time to start planning is 6-9 months prior to travel, especially if traveling during the holidays or peak season for the destination.

Europe Travel:  The 6 month window is a great timeframe for most European Travel.

Exotic Destinations:  Are you thinking about the South Pacific?  The Maldives? Asia?  An African Safari?  Australia or New Zealand?  These are best planned 8-10 months in advance .

Obviously this is just a general overview and certainly does not encompass all situations.  For advice regarding your specific vacation dream, call me today and let’s start planning your future memories!

Safe Travels!

What if ???

What if things don’t go as planned?  What if you can’t depart or get home when you are scheduled to?  I experienced this again first hand on Sunday.  We were fogged out of the port and unable to return to Galveston at our scheduled time.  This not only impacted those of us on our ship, but passengers on another ship waiting to get in to Galveston, and all of the passengers waiting to board each of these ships to start their cruises.

What if things don’t go as planned?  What do you do?

First and foremost, you must immediately bring every ounce of your patience to the forefr
ont of your personality.  Being patient, calm, and rational will get you more results than a poor reaction.  I was stunned at the number of passengers yelling at employees that they were g
oing to be late for church, dinner, missing their flights, etc….  Weather for example is no fault of the crew, and honestly… they were no happier than we were to be “stuck”.  Yes, it is frustrating, but there are ways to survive the “what if’s “of travel.

What if you know you are going to miss a flight for reasons beyond your control?  If you are on a cruise, the first thing to do is contact your travel agent and / or your travel insurance carrier to advise them of the situation and ask how to best proceed.

If you purchased travel insurance, you will have a 24 hour emergency number to contact and that should be your first call.  It is important to alert the insurance company to a potential claim so the integrity of the policy is protected and you receive any benefits (reimbursements for additional costs) possible.

If it is not possible to reach the insurance company right away, keep very good track of your receipts and conversations for later documentation when filing your claim.  For example, on weather disaster days hold times can be very long and frustrating.
I had one client hold multiple times for over 30 minutes; I asked her to keep track so in the days following, when she finally could speak with them they will know that she tried in good faith to immediately notify them.

If you are traveling on a packaged vacation (such as an all-inclusive or escorted tour vacation), the first thing to do is contact the 24 hour emergency number that you were provided in your travel documents.

What if the flights are cancelled and you are already at the airport?
Regardless of type of vacation, work directly with the airline so they can re-accommodate you on the next available flight.  Many airlines have an automated system that automatically will accommodate you on the next available flight.  This is a good reason to download that airline app and sign up for their mobile alerts!  (This came in very handy for me when my flight was cancelled out of Los Angeles 3 weeks ago – I knew my new flight info before I ever got to the front of the line at the gate!)  Once the airline has re-accommodated you, you can notify your travel agent / travel insurance of your new flights and go from there.

There will always be a “What if” when it comes to travel, and many other life situations.  Having a little knowledge up front can help you navigate the situation with less stress.  When you are planning your travel, don’t be afraid to ask the “What if” questions!  A little bit of knowledge and preparation can go a long way!

Now – What time is my Spa appointment ?

Right now,
I’m on the newly renovated Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas!  Amazing!!!!

Here are a couple of pictures; I’ll have more for you next week.

She underwent extensive renovations last month and she is now home ported in Galveston year round.  The Navigator of the Seas has 15 decks, 16 bars, clubs, & lounges, and 10 pools & whirlpools.

Some of the new enhancements include virtual balconies, more specialty dining venues, a 220 sq. ft. outdoor screen, and a flow rider (think surf simulator).

The Navigator of the seas is the first ship to debut virtual balconies! Enjoy the sights and sounds of the sea with expansive real-time views of the ocean and our exciting destinations—all from the comforts of your interior stateroom. In addition to the virtual balconies, there will be panoramic ocean view staterooms with floor-to-ceiling windows.

There is enough activity on this ship to keep anyone and everyone busy!

Speaking of activities, I’m going to get back to enjoying what this beautiful ship has to offer!  It is my obligation to test out everything the ship has to offer so I can better assist you in planning your perfect cruise!

Keep Calm and Pre-Check !!

Just in time for the holidays, TSA has announced significant expansion to their TSA pre-check program.  If you aren’t already TSA Pre-check approved, I highly recommend you look in to this!  This program can truly make a difference in your travel experience.
In a nutshell, what does TSA Pre-Check experience mean for you?

(Information courtesy of www.tsa.gov)

  • Quicker transit through airport lanes
  • Shorter lines
  • Shorter wait times
  • Improved customer experience
  • No Removal of:
    • Belt
    • Shoes
    • Light outerwear/Light Jacket
    • 3-1-1 compliant bag and laptop from carry-on
      • Note- you still have to comply with 3-1-1 rules, you just don’t have to remove them from your carry –on bag.

Here is a summary of some of the recent enhancements to the program:

  • TSA now has an online application process via their website (www.tsa.gov); this will allow you to directly enroll in their expedited screening program.
  • TSA also recently announced the expansion of the TSA Pre-Check program to include Jet Blue Airways and Southwest Airlines.
  • TSA has also partnered with the DOD to provide Military TSA Pre✓™ at 100 Airports.  Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as Reservists and National Guard members, eligible for expedited screening beginning December 20, 2013.

There are currently 100 airports and 9 different airlines that participate in the TSA Pre-Check program, with more being added on a regular basis.   To see if TSA Pre-Check is available at your local airport, please check http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck/airlines-airports
To enroll, there is an $85 non-refundable fee and a very specific application process.

To learn more about the application process, please visit http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck

and to find the nearest Universal Services Enrollment center, please visit:  https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/faq
There are other ways to take advantage of TSA Pre-Check as well.

If you enroll in Global Entry and become a trusted traveler, you are also eligible for TSA Pre-Check.  I am a huge proponent of Global Entry, this one program can save you time and frustration when re-entering the US after international travel.  You may also be eligible based on your status within a given airline’s frequent flier program.
Sometimes, the most challenging part of your vacation experience is the getting there and getting home.

TSA Pre-Check can significantly ease that challenge and provide for a better airport experience during your travel.  I love it!!  For me, just the fact that I don’t have to take off my shoes, virtually unpack my carry-on to get out my laptop, and 3-1-1 bag make it all worthwhile.  Of course the shorter line is nice too!   I do feel a little bad when I am traveling with others and they aren’t part of the TSA Pre-Check program… just a little….

Happy Travels!

The rivers are growing !!

River cruising is still a growing trend and experiencing some of the most rapid growth in the travel industry, and no doubt the most growth in the cruise market.  In the past 10 years, the number of passengers taking river cruises has grown by 15 percent; the ocean cruising segment has seen about 5.4 percent growth. The industry has experienced 10 percent annual growth for five years running.  River cruising is done predominantly in Europe and other exotic areas of the world, but it is becoming increasingly popular in the United States as well.  This is destination immersion at its finest!  Some of the world’s greatest cities are accessible only by river – not by the ocean.  You visit a different city each day and have the entire day and often the evening to enjoy the local area and culture. Cruising the world’s rivers from Europe to Russia and is truly a special experience.

I for one thought river cruising was for the older generation but I was completely wrong in more ways than one. This new way to cruise is for the adventurous.  You are docked right into the heart of the city. You walk on cobblestones. You are eating pho, knockwurst and other traditional foods. You are there to really experience the cultures and sounds of the world.  This is for the “Bucket List” crowd.  Let’s not forget about the romance of it all!  Can you imagine spending your honeymoon immersed in European culture?

Photo courtesy of Uniworld River Cruises.                   Photo courtesy of Viking Cruises.

Although an increasingly popular and an amazing experience, river cruising is not for everyone.  The river cruise ships are not designed with small children in mind; there are no children’s programs, activities or menus available on the majority of the ships and itineraries.  Some of the river cruise lines offer specific family itineraries during the summer months, but most report less than 2% of their passengers are under the age of 18.

River cruising can also be a challenge for physically challenged guests as well; the ships are not designed with handicap accessibility for the most part.  Many ships have no elevators, or if they do, they may not reach the lower decks on the ship.   Cobblestone streets and many stairs throughout Europe can also present challenges.

Even in the US, the ships and destinations can be challenging, but they are certainly more accessible than the global options.
For those only familiar with the rules of big ships, here are three reasons riverboat fanatics come back, time and again, for more.

Dinner
Forget buffet dining with 2,000 strangers. River cruises average about 200 passengers per boat, so the wait staff will likely know your name by the end of the first meal (and so will your fellow travelers).
Evening Entertainment
Instead of dance clubs, karaoke, and glitzy Vegas-style reviews, nightlife on river cruises trends toward string quartets, guest lectures on regional history, local entertainment, and staring out at actual scenery, not just a watery horizon.
Extra Costs
The dirty little secrets of ocean cruises? They always charge extra for excursions, and beer and wine costs are on par with pro sports arenas. River cruise lines opt for flat fees up front.  Yes, your excursions are included, as are wine and beer with various meals.

(Each river cruise line has its own version of their inclusive plan)
River cruising is such a fast-growing trend that by the end of 2013, 167 new ships will have been built since 2000.
When will you be ready to experience the world’s great rivers for yourself?

Did you know ??

Did you know that there have been a couple of significant developments and changes in travel recently?  I thought I’d share a couple of them with you so you will be “in the know”.
First and probably most importantly,

Did you know        The Houston Passport Agency closed for renovations on Monday September 23, 2013 and is not scheduled to re-open until early2014?  How does this affect you?  Hopefully, you will plan ahead and it won’t!  All of the other passport acceptance agencies are still open and accepting applications and renewals as always.  There could be a slight delay in processing as now one of the major processing offices is closed.  They are not projecting huge delays, but in my opinion, that remains to be seen.  (We also have a potential government shut down, or more possible furloughs on the horizon.)  Please plan early and do not wait until the last minute to apply or renew your passport.  Applicants in the greater Houston are that are in need of emergency passport services for immediate travel should schedule an appointment with the closest passport agencies located in Dallas, El Paso, and New Orleans. Appointments at passport agencies and passport information can also be obtained by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778.

Did you know       about the TSA Pre-Check Program?  As stated on their website, “TSA Pre✓™ allows select frequent flyers of participating airlines and members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler programs who are flying on participating airlines, to receive expedited screening benefits. Eligible participants use dedicated screening lanes for screening benefits which include leaving on shoes, light outerwear and belts, as well as leaving laptops and 3-1-1 compliant liquids in carry-on bags.”  This is available at select airports, and there are plans to expand the program as well.  I can tell you that I personally LOVE this program!  It has really expedited my airport travels.  For more information, please visit:  http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck
Did you know     Southwest Airlines has begun enforcing their new no-show policy?  As stated on their website:  If you are not planning to travel on any portion of your itinerary, please cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes prior to scheduled departure of the flight. For tickets purchased on or after May 10, 2013, for travel beginning September 13, 2013, Customers who fail to cancel or change a Wanna Get Away or DING! fare segment at least 10 minutes prior to travel and who do not board the flight, will be considered a no show, and all remaining funds on this reservation will be forfeited, including Business Select and Anytime funds.  For more information, please visit:  http://www.southwest.com/html/air/fare-information.html
Did you know       in early summer United Airlines started offering Economy Plus Subscriptions?  The annual subscription starts at $499 per person and be purchased by the traveler or given as a gift.  This subscription allows the passenger access to the coveted Economy Plus seating which has more leg room and is closer to front of the plane.  There are some terms and conditions to be aware of so please check http://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/products/subscriptions/economyPlus.aspx
The only thing consistent in the world of travel is change!  Working with a travel professional will help insure that you are up to date and prepared to travel!

What are you looking for ??

Well, travel agent training season is in full swing!  It is crazy busy with classes, meetings, and conferences.  Late summer and fall is the travel agent training season – many conferences and events to attend. These events help me serve you better by keeping up with all of the latest industry news and trends.  Just last week I attended a Viking Cruises event and a Sandals WeddingMoons update meeting.  This week I’m attending trainings for Holland America and Crystal Cruises.

One question I am often asked by potential clients is what should I look for in a travel agent?  Or why should I use a travel agent instead of the internet?  Those are great questions!   My first answer to that question is simple, education and experience.  There are formal education programs and certifications for travel agents, but many of them don’t mean much to you the client.  One thing you really need to look for is an agent that is actively involved in the industry and continuing to educate themselves in the industry.  Things change all of the time and keeping up with the current travel trends is essential.  The internet is good at a lot of things, but it cannot replace personal knowledge and first-hand experiences.

I can’t tell you how many times “the internet” has been to Jamaica, but I can tell you I have been there 4 times in the last 13 months.
Earlier this month I attended the Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Specialist Association Fall conference.  I am a proud charter member and on the advisory board of this fabulous organization.  Why is that important to you? As a Couples Travel Concierge, it is important that I stay on top of the latest industry trends with regards to Destination Weddings and Honeymoons.  Even if you aren’t a honeymoon couple, knowing the latest and greatest about all of the resorts is invaluable to your vacation experience.

For example, I am a certified Hawaii Destination Specialist and one of our sessions was specifically regarding special occasion venues and resort updates throughout the islands.  I am also a Master Agent with AMResorts and we had resort update sessions directly with one of their business development managers about some of the new resorts they have and will have in their portfolio of brands.
The first weekend of next month I’m off to Jamaica for a week to tour resorts, meet with transfer companies, and attend a conference.  Later in the month is Cruise Planners national convention as well as the inaugural event for the new Royal Princess Cruise Ship.

It is also important to work with an agent that is actively involved in travel organizations, associations, and works as part of a large consortium.  There is no way I can visit every single destination in the world (but I am trying!), but through my vast network of affiliations and contacts, I can find someone who has been there and tap in to their first-hand knowledge.  You want to work with a travel professional that is engaged and actively involved in the travel community.  It’s one thing to pass a certification test, it’s another thing to continue your education and be involved.
I’m not telling you this to let you know how much I travel (trust me – this is only the tip of that iceberg!), or how many organizations I am in.   I’m telling you because I place a high priority on my continuing education.

The more I learn and the more places I visit, the better service I can provide you.   If you are looking for your perfect romantic vacation, relaxing vacation, or looking for a fun, adventurous vacation, I can provide you with updated and accurate information.
When planning your future vacation experience, keep in mind, you are creating memories.  Let a professional help you create your perfect future memories!

Remember, the internet is for looking – Travel Professionals are for booking !!

An island with dual personalities. ?

Have you ever been to an island with dual personalities?  One such island is St. Maarten / St. Martin.

St. Maarten is the Dutch side of the island and St. Martin is the French side of the island.  Together they share a fantastic island! The island has its own distinct charm, but the combination is a fabulous blend of colonial and Caribbean splendor. Visitors have the unique experience of enjoying 2 distinct cultures on one stunning tropical island.  Dutch St. Maarten is known for being lively and cosmopolitan, while French St. Martin is more tranquil and has the flair of San Tropez.  The island is widely known for some of the best dining and duty-free bargains in the Caribbean!

St. Maarten / St. Martin is a 37-square-mile, tropical island in the northeast Caribbean with year-round temperatures in the 80’s.  The island is surrounded by spectacular beaches where you can snorkel, dive, windsurf and kayak in the stunning, warm and crystalline waters.  Away from the beach lie colorful open-air markets, sites rich in colonial grandeur, acclaimed restaurants of every flavor and variety, and an artistic community that brings the world’s cultural elite to celebrate this tropical brilliance. This island is ideally suited for beach lovers, foodies, and shoppers.

The Dutch side, St. Maarten, is on the southern side of the island.  It offers a lively atmosphere with an American feel, and fun that includes great beaches, fine dining, bars and nightclubs, and Vegas-style casinos. Nights are the time to experience true Caribbean evening culture on this little metropolitan island. Simpson Bay and the bustling capital of Philipsburg are where you’ll find St. Maarten’s dining and entertainment hubs. Philipsburg is also known for its long streets of quaint shops with terrific duty-free bargains.

The French side, St. Martin, is on the north side of the island and exudes a chic European charm.  Very reminiscent of France it is enhanced by sidewalk cafes and an array of bistros and restaurants that cook up the most fabulous gourmet cuisine in the Caribbean. The beaches are peaceful serene and very European in their atmosphere.  Certain nights at Marigot port and Marina Royale feature many local bands and avant-garde street entertainers. The Marina area is also a hotspot for several chic nightclubs.

The capital of Marigot is slower paced than Philipsburg, but the duty-free shopping here and elsewhere is excellent, with French-inspired arcades offering a wide selection of European goods.
When it comes to beaches on St Maarten / St Martin, they are spectacular!  There are 37 white sand beaches that encircle the island. Whether they prefer people-watching, nonstop action, or peaceful seclusion, there is something for everyone. Some beaches feature calm waters perfect for families, while others boast waves large enough for surfing. As a note, there are a number of beaches on the French side of the island that are clothing-optional. Orient Beach is the island’s only official nudist beach. The beaches on the Dutch side are a bit more conservative.
St Maarten / St Martin is an island that lives up to the phrase big things come in small packages!  I hope you have enjoyed your brief overview of St Maarten / St Martin.

Let me know when you are ready to start planning those future memories!

Are you fit to travel ??

As a professional Couples Travel Concierge, my consultations and conversations cover a wide variety of topics with my clients.  Quite often, Future Vacation Travelers will express concerns about getting fit or healthy before their vacation experience.  Believe it or not, with some time, dedication and working with a professional, you can improve your fitness before it is time to travel.  Some travelers tell me they want to lose weight; others tell me they need to increase their endurance or level of fitness because they want to have a very active vacation.  Whatever your fitness or health needs are, it is great to address them before travel so you can make the most of your vacation experience
Many of us have tried to get fit and healthy on our own with varying degrees of success. Being a professional myself, I always encourage the use of professionals in any given field.   If you are looking for a professional to help you, I’d like to introduce you to 2 ladies that have slightly different approaches to fit and healthy lifestyles. I personally know both of them and either one can provide great motivation and support for you.   I recently interviewed each of these ladies about their approaches to getting fit and healthy for travel and I’d like to share with you their thoughts.
