Don’t waste your money !!!

As a Couples Travel Concierge I am often asked “why should I use a travel agent?” Although I could give a list of 100 reasons off the top of my head, it all boils down to this – don’t waste your time or money!

The famous Warren Buffet quote “Price is what you pay, Value is what you get”. As a professional travel concierge, my goal is to help you find the best value for your vacation dollar. Price and value are not always (and sometimes not at all) the same! We all know what price is… it is the amount you pay for a given item, service, or in this case, vacation. Value is another matter entirely. You might say that as your travel concierge I act as your value interpreter.
Value, what is it to you? For some people, value is time and time is money. For some people value is convenience. For some people value is knowledge and expertise. As a professional travel concierge I work with only the best vacation providers to insure that you have a seamless and flawless vacation experience from start to finish thus providing you with time, convenience, my knowledge and expertise.
I’m often asked “are you more expensive than the internet?” That depends, are you talking about price, or value? Most often my clients will find my prices are very competitive; however, admittedly, sometimes my prices may not be less than “the internet” – but the value I bring is considerably more than that.
Do you have the time to research the endless options for your vacation? Do you have the time to deal with things if something goes awry? How convenient is it for you when there is a schedule change and you are notified? How convenient is it for you if you don’t know the documentation requirements and you show up without the correct documents?
Some people think booking on the internet is the way to book travel. If you decide to book “on the internet”, wouldn’t it be interesting to find out if the internet has ever been to where you want to go? Does the internet answer the phone on the weekends or at night if you have a travel emergency? Perhaps you decide to book with an online agency that has a call center. Often times the call center employees (note: they are usually not travel agents) have never traveled to your destination and only knows what “the internet” tells them. Not to mention, have you ever tried to reach an “online agency” from another country? Rarely do they have international phone support and it can be quite difficult to email the help desk if you are in the midst of a storm with no power.
Obviously, the choice is yours. When it’s my money, I opt for value over price every day.

Where can you go ??

A couple of weeks ago I participated in a bridal show; one question that came up frequently throughout the day is where can I go for my honeymoon if we don’t have passports?  I also get this question quite often from other travelers as well.  Not everyone wants or can get a passport; some people just don’t plan their travel far enough ahead to get a passport or consider their passport expiration dates (you know who you are!).
The good news is there are some really great destinations outside of the mainland US that you can visit without passports!  There can be a slight downside to this as well – all-inclusive resorts will not be prevalent in these destinations, they will be very few if any.  This is not a bad thing, but something to consider when doing your budget for your vacation experience.  Let’s take a look at your options!
Hawaii is always a fantastic vacation destination!  Each island has its own distinct personality so we can really customize your vacation to the type of experience you are looking for.  You can visit one island or multiple; if you have longer than 5 days, I highly recommend visiting at least 2 islands to really get a great experience.  One thing to remember, the flights home are very often over night flights, you will need to keep this in mind when planning your travel dates.
Puerto Rico is another great option that does not require a passport.  Puerto Rico is the perfect blend of colonial Spanish culture, amazing natural beauty and contemporary lifestyles. You can visit historic Old San Juan, awe-inspiring rainforests, coffee plantations and rum distilleries to explore as well.  Explore endless stretches of beautiful beaches where you can snorkel, sail, fish and surf.
The US Virgin Islands offer a tropical vacation option for you with no passport required.  The US Virgin Islands consist of St Thomas, St John, and St Croix.  St. Thomas offers a variety of attractions, beaches and activities.  Water sports, tennis, restaurants and nightlife are very popular.  The capital city, Charlotte Amalie, is a major port of call for duty-free shopping.  St John is just off shore from St Thomas and is a nature lover’s paradise since much of the island is a national park.  Most guests fly in and out of St Thomas and take the ferry over to St. John.  St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin islands, but in many ways the most unspoiled of them all.  You can explore the beaches, the Old Danish Towns or check out the national parks. I would be remiss if I did not caution you about traveling to the US Virgin Islands without a passport.  Please remember, many of the neighboring islands are considered foreign nations so you will not be able to visit them without passports.
While traveling the world and getting your passport booked stamped until it is full is always a great plan, traveling without a passport can be an awesome experience as well!
Happy Travels,

Are you a Freestyle Traveler ??

This weekend we depart on Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Getaway and will be cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

The thing that Norwegian Cruise Line is most well-known for is their FreeStyle cruising.  FreeStyle cruising is many things to many people.  With some of the newest ships in the industry, Norwegian Cruise Line currently boasts the youngest fleet among major North American cruise lines.  Norwegian continues the expansion and modernization of their fleet with the Norwegian Escape set to debut in 2015

FreeStyle cruising is a great choice for the independent folks who want to truly do it their way.  There are no set dining times, no set dining tables, and no formal nights!    FreeStyle dining is fantastic for those long port days on port intensive itineraries.  You no longer have to leave your destination early to get back in time for dining, or on nights when you are hungry early, you don’t have to “snack” before dinner.  Your vacation truly is whatever you want it to be.   Some of the dining options (which can vary by ship) include a wide variety of complimentary dining with up to 3 main dining rooms, a buffet, and 24 hour room service.  Specialty dining is also creative and varied throughout the fleet.  Experience the fine cuisine of Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian. Indulge in succulent meats at Moderno Churrascaria or on Certified Angus Beef® at Cagney’s Steakhouse, exclusively on Norwegian. Dine on expertly prepared chicken, steak and shrimp at Teppanyaki. Or savor French cuisine at Le Bistro and go for Italian at La Cucina. They’re all on board – and they’re all delicious. Cover charges for the specialty dining venues range between $15 – $99 per guest; with $25 being the average.  Having experienced many of them, I can honestly say they are more than worth the coverage charge!

Norwegian also touts their FreeStyle entertainment and FreeStyle accommodations.

When it comes to entertainment and activities, they have truly raised the bar!  They have bowling alleys, Wii sports, multiple supervised recreational programs, and a golf program with Elite Golf.  The entertainment is first rate with options on some ships such as Blue Man Group, Second City Comedy, Howl at the Moon, amazing production shows, White Hot deck parties and more.  On the new ship, the Norwegian Getaway you will be able to see the musical Legally Blond or Wine Lovers, the musical.

With regards to the FreeStyle accommodations, the choices are vast!  There are the traditional interior, ocean view, balcony, and mini-suites for you.  Norwegian also caters to the solo travelers with their studio cabins.  The studio cabins are specifically designed for the solo traveler complete with their own social gathering area.  The suites are where they have really stepped up the FreeStyle accommodations.
They have recently introduced The Haven.  The Haven is a ship within a ship feel!  Hidden away at the top of the ship is an exclusive enclave with the most luxurious, well-appointed and spacious accommodations. Not only will you have access to all the ship has to offer, you’ll enjoy the personal service of a 24-hour butler and concierge throughout your entire stay.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of Freestyle cruising on Norwegian Cruise Lines.  I’m happy to share any additional information if you have questions.  Be on the watch for an upcoming article dedicated to the new Norwegian Getaway.

Happy Travels!

I bet you know Someone !!

I bet you know someone… I can finish this sentence with a myriad of phrases… the first one that comes to mind (maybe because I have seen it all over Facebook this morning) is “selling girl scout cookies”.

I bet you know someone or know of someone who has recently made a big announcement!  Here we are in the middle of January and a new season is upon us!  Okay, it may not be upon you, but in my industry, it is known as engagement, bridal show, and celebration season!

The vast majority of engagements occur at Christmas, New Years, and Valentine’s Day.  January and February are the most popular months for bridal shows.  If you think about it, I bet you have heard about at least 1, if not more than one engagement or even a milestone anniversary or birthday that is going to occur this year.  I know I have a milestone birthday this year!  It seems January is the month where most people realize, wow – I’m going to be “X” this year!, or Wow – we’ll have been married “X” number of years this year!, or even Wow, I get to retire this year!
When it comes to Celebration travel (such as Destination Weddings, Honeymoons, milestone birthday or anniversary celebrations), planning your travel in the appropriate time frame is of the utmost importance to maximize your vacation experience and your value.
The best time to start planning your Destination Wedding is 8-10 months prior, possibly up to 1 year in some cases.  The best time to plan honeymoon and other celebration travel is 6-9 months prior to travel – possibly longer for some more exotic options!  Certainly honeymoons and other celebration travel can be planned in less than 6 months, as long as there is availability where and when you want to travel, we can make this happen for you!

If you plan to honeymoon in the summer, or around the holidays, advanced planning is critical if you want to take advantage of the best availability combined with the best value.  One of the biggest myth’s in the travel industry is that there are better deals the closer to the travel dates… that is just not true.  Plan early; don’t be disappointed that you can’t get your first choice.

If you are taking a group with you for your special event, early planning is a must.  Resorts and Cruise Lines do not always have group space available if you are planning less than 6 – 8 months in advance.  It is also important when you are ready to plan, that you have a good idea of the number of guests and the budget each guest is willing to spend for the travel.  This is always the hardest part when planning your group celebration, especially Destination Weddings.  You have to take all budgets in to consideration when planning your special event if it requires them to travel.
I can assist you with any type of honeymoon or celebration travel you may be considering.  Resort?  Tour in Europe?  Hawaii?  Tahiti? Cruise?   The possibilities are endless….

I am a Couples Travel Concierge and a Cruise Planners / American Express travel services company. I provide exceptional value and our upscale vacation experiences are known to over deliver.  Thanks to our deep relationships, I am able to offer exclusive amenities and offers to my valued clients.  I will handle every detail and treat your honeymoon planning experience as if it were my own.

Safe Travels!

Can we afford our celebration travel ??

Have you heard about a travel gift registry?  It works just like a traditional gift registry for a wedding, only your guests and friends give you gifts to make your honeymoon or other celebration travel perfect.  Travel registries are great for Destination Weddings and Honeymoons, but are also great for anniversaries, vow renewals, milestone birthdays, graduations, even the ever so deserving babymoons.

Many couples are well established and don’t need any more towels, dishes, picture frames or another toaster.  Asking for cash gifts is not always appropriate or acceptable.  A travel gift registry can solve this problem and make it a win-win for all involved.  List anything you want to do on your trip and let your guests and friends pay for a portion of your trip!  Recent data shows that average bride and groom are getting approximately $2500 for their honeymoon registry.  Celebration travel for other occasions is quickly catching up!

Sure, towels and a Mont Blanc pen sound nice. But do you ever wish of going to an exotic island and getting pampered by your own private butler? Think it’s out of reach? Not with a travel gift registry!
