Traveling During COVID…

It’s hard to believe that it’s November already. I’m partial to the month of October, as it’s my wedding anniversary month. I’ve been lucky enough to be married to my husband for 27 years now. It’s been a great ride so far and I can’t wait to see what the next 27 or more bring us. We try every October to travel for our anniversary, and believe it or not, this year was no exception!

Travel is possible now, but it is still a very personal decision for many.

It’s no secret that the travel industry has been turned upside down this year due to COVID. Slowly but surely, travel is coming back, and destinations are welcoming tourism. In the last 2 months I have visited both the Dominican Republic and Mexico. I visited both to check out resorts and have firsthand experience with the current travel protocols. I did extend my stay in Mexico and had Steve join me for an early anniversary getaway. I also rode out Hurricane Delta, but that’s another story for another time. Long story short, my resort was far enough south we did just fine through the storm.

Both of the destinations I visited (the Dominican Republic and Mexico) are doing a good job of managing tourism with regards to protocols and expectations. As of this time, neither destination requires a COVID test as a stipulation for entering the country, but both have health screening measures in place.

Getting to the destinations obviously involved air travel. I experienced 2 different airlines and had positive experiences on both. Some airlines are still blocking the middle seats, some are not. Flights are starting to fill to maximum allowable capacity on the flights. Several months ago, flights were largely empty, or cancelled. While many airlines have dramatically decreased their flight schedules world-wide, the flights to popular tourist destinations are increasing again. Masks are required in airports and social distancing is requested. I had a couple of hours before my flight out of Houston recently and stopped counting after I had counted 200 hundred of those little round social distancing stickers throughout the airport. I decided I was bored at the airport, but not that bored! Masks are required on flights for all guests over a certain age. Each airline has their own age policy, so it is important to check prior to flying. Airlines are not making any exceptions to their policy. If there is some reason you, your loved one, or children cannot wear a mask, flying may not be the best option at this time.

In many destinations, shared transportation to resorts is being limited to only those families or guests traveling together, otherwise, private transportation is being highly recommended if not required. Masks are often required in the transfer vehicle; this is to help protect the driver as well as the guests.

Resorts in destinations accepting tourism have multiple health and safety protocols as it relates to guest safety and staff safety. Resorts have very strict criteria that has been imposed by their local and national governments that they must comply with in order to open and accept guests. At this time, all resorts have a guest capacity limitation and it varies from 30% – 60% depending on the local government requirements. Most resorts have implanted some form of “touchless” check-in procedures and all staff throughout the resorts are wearing Personal Protective Equipment. Hand sanitizer is plentiful and will be offered any time contact is required or prior to dining. In some areas, theaters, bars and nightclubs are not yet allowed to be open, so the resorts are being creative with the use of open air or outside venues for evening entertainment and activities.

Dining has also evolved with increased precautions to prevent the spread of viruses. Resorts no longer have true buffets; all buffets are either staff assisted buffets or have turned in to more traditional dining with wait staff. Most resorts are not using paper menu’s if they can avoid it. QR codes are now the norm in most restaurants, much like we have seen here in the states. You can use your smart phone camera to hover over the QR Code and you will get a prompt to open the menu. Mexico is also using this technology for health screening survey at the airport.

Some activities and tours are limited in some destinations, but more and more are coming back with each passing week. In the beginning, it was mostly only outdoor activities where social distancing could be easily accommodated. We are now seeing more and more facilities, attractions, and activities being adjusted to accommodate social distancing. Many destinations do require the use of masks if in public places, so it is important to check prior to your activity.

As of now, there are several Caribbean destinations and a few other international destinations open to travel. Travel requires with regards to COVID testing requirements vary significantly and are changing often. I spend hours each day checking for changes and updates to make sure all guests are well informed.

Happy Travels,

Travel is returning…

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has created chaos in our daily lives. There have been quarantines, stay at home, shortages of toilet paper, Lysol, and it will be a year not soon forgotten. How have you been coping? Our dogs have certainly enjoyed our being at home more, we have spent more time with my mom, and taken advantage of a bit of a slower pace. We did get to enjoy a ranch weekend with our granddaughter; it was the perfect place to safely social distance yet spend time together.

In the world of travel, COVID-19 brought it to a standstill for months. Never has the world seen the likes of the travel disruption we have seen since March. There is finally some good news out there, and some light at the end of the tunnel for travelers.

You can still take a vacation or honeymoon! Depending on the time frame, the vacation or honeymoon of your dreams is still out there waiting to be planned. Planning travel with confidence is easy by following a few important tips in the planning process.

First and foremost, work with a professional travel advisor. Professional travel advisors have worked tirelessly throughout this global health crisis to assist their clients with rescheduling or canceling and did not turn their back on their clients in the same way many of the internet booking sites did.

Professional travel advisors also keep up with all the latest protocols and requirements for both international and domestic travel. Each week we see more destinations opening to tourism. Every international destination has protocols for re-opening when they feel the time is right for them as determined by their governing bodies. Domestically, some states are restricting visitors from other states as well as restricting public activities, restaurants, tourist attractions, and more. The protocols are changing weekly and sometimes daily. Protocols can range from restricting guests based on where they live to requiring health related testing prior to arrival. It’s important to remember that the protocols are not recommendations, but requirements for visiting their countries or states.

Sound complicated? It’s not when working with a professional travel advisor. While the situation is fluid and ever changing, travel advisors have access to the current most up to date information and will gladly guide their clients through the process.

Travel Protection (aka Travel Insurance) has never been more important in travel. However, it’s important to have the right kind of travel protection. It’s not all created equal. Not all plans will allow for cancellations due to an epidemic or pandemic. Not all plans will protect 100% of the money invested in the honeymoon. Working with a professional travel advisor will ensure the proper travel protection is selected.

Still want to travel but feeling a little nervous? There are some ways to still travel yet keep social distancing in check without compromising on experience. Upon arrival to the destination, consider upgrading to private transfers. Not only do they start the in-destination experience off first class, it will avoid sharing a van with a larger number of people. Consider resorts that offer rooms with private plunge pools or even swim up rooms. Enjoy a pool yet have privacy and avoid the crowds. Individual casitas or overwater bungalows will offer privacy, crowd control and add another layer of romance to the honeymoon. Club level rooms or suites often offer access to smaller more private pools, beach areas, lounges, or even restaurants at resorts again reducing the crowd exposure.

Being flexible when it comes to the flights will offer the most options. All airlines have experienced cutbacks on destinations or the frequency per day or week they fly to any given destination. Being willing to drive a little further to another airport or start the vacation on a different day of the week may make all the difference in the vacation or honeymoon experience. It’s also important to remember each airline will have their own set of health and safety protocols in place. Again, these are not recommendations, but requirements to fly on their airlines.

Lastly, the most important part of an international trip is the passport. If planning to travel in 2021 and still don’t have a passport, start the process now. There is a backlog of approximately 1 million passports and several of the passport processing centers are still not even open. The normal processing time of 6-8 weeks is now expected to take 4-5 months in some cases. It’s important to remember for many international destinations a passport must be valid for 6 months beyond the dates of travel. Keep these time frames in consideration if a passport renewal is required.

Don’t be hesitant to plan now, plan smartly by working with a professional travel advisor, and create those future memories.

All-Inclusive Resorts – Are they worth it?

Last month I was so honored to attend the grand opening of the new Hard Rock Los Cabos. All-inclusive resorts are always an amazing vacation experience, and this was no exception. Between all of the grand opening events and being awarded a Double Platinum Agent Award, it was a trip to remember. This new resort is a great fit for adults looking to have a fun getaway, or that family fun getaway. I’m often asked what I like about all-inclusive resorts, I usually reply with “What’s not to like?”.

The all-inclusive resort used to be considered the “budget inn” of travel. Images of a rowdy crowd drinking in the Jacuzzi, bland food, forced group activities and limited entertainment was the norm. Today, the all-inclusive concept has expanded to unlimited activities such as golf on a championship golf course, gourmet meals, and more upscale intimate resorts.

More and more vacationers are looking into all-inclusive resorts and the industry is listening. The reasons for the popularity of all-inclusive resorts are time and value. Travel experts say that pre-paying for all the food and drinks ahead of time allows you to have a more enjoyable getaway because you don’t have to think about how much you are spending and you don’t have to worry about carrying your wallet around the resort. Think of it as a no-hassle, stress-free vacation.

An all-inclusive resort usually includes:

  • Accommodations
  • All meals
  • Drinks including wine, beer and spirits
  • Daily activities
  • Entertainment
  • All tips and gratuities and more.

It’s best to choose the resort that has the activities and atmosphere that best matches your interest. Kid-friendly or romantic hideaway? Beach or endless pools? Whatever’s your fancy, there is one just for you.

When I am looking to steal away with just the hubby, you bet I’m going to hit one of the Adult Only All-Inclusive Resorts. Even in the adult only category of resorts, there are variations such as “adult only”, “couples only”, or lifestyle resorts. If you are looking for a getaway with friends, an adult only resort may be the perfect match. Couples only resorts are very strict in that they are for couples only, generally only one king bed in the room and no solo guests allowed.

All-inclusive family resorts have something for everyone, young and old. Some of the most popular resorts are located in Mexico and the Caribbean. Family friendly all-inclusive resorts can be great for just your family, or a multi-generational family getaway. Great beaches, fun watersports and awesome age appropriate kids’ program. But wait. There’s more!

In addition to the “normal” inclusions, some of the resorts offer additional amenities or experience such as:

  • Family/connecting accommodations
  • Kids Club
  • Kids Only Dining Room
  • Teens Only Club
  • Organized games and activities
  • Family activities
  • Kid-friendly pools and waterparks
  • Themed character activities such as the gang from Sesame Street
  • Adult Night Club
  • Fitness Center
  • Spa / Beauty Salon (*additional cost)

Both family friendly and adult only resorts offer a wide array of accommodations and service levels. Rooms with swim up pools, private plunge pools, sweeping oceanfront views, suites with 1 or 2 bedrooms or even 2 stories are just a few of the options. Some resorts will have individual casitas, or private bungalow style accommodations. Are you looking for a little extra pampering? You should consider a butler. Butler service can really take your vacation to the next level. Not ready to go for the butler but want something a bit more than “the norm”, many resorts offer a Club Level.

Are all-inclusive resorts worth it? Yes! More than ever.

Happy Travels,

Enhanced and Efficient Travel

It’s hard to believe the year is just flying by! It’s another year I’ve explored various destinations around the globe. I’ve attended and presented at trainings in Florida, sailed on a new cruise ship inaugural sailing, been on an African Safari, visited Ohio, attended a conference in California, and spoke at a conference in Punta Cana. (I still have Mexico, 2 more cruise ship inaugurations, and a conference in Florida.) Having traveled for business weekly in my previous career, the one thing I have learned is how to travel efficiently.
I’m often asked, “Why should I use a travel agent”? Well, I could go on and on for days about that, but instead I’ll focus on one small area… enhanced efficiency, experience and service on your way to and home from your destination!
Did you know there are some destinations that have VIP arrival services? These allow you to expedite your arrival in destination. You aren’t expedited in the sense of you aren’t screened – you are expedited by not having to wait in the general long line. They also have staff that will accompany you every step of the way through immigration and customs to ensure a smooth process for you.
Private transfers are another great option to enhance your experience in route to your destination. There are different levels of service and different types of vehicles, but the one constant is you go non-stop to your destination. Did you know that when you book some all-inclusive resort packages, you can stop at as many as 5 resorts on the way to your resort? That can easily add another hour to your travel. Regardless of the type of vacation, private transfers also save you time because you are not waiting for a bus or shuttle to fill.
When it comes time to go home, often times after a nice relaxing vacation, you encounter the chaos of a busy airport to start your journey home. Nothing starts stress like a chaotic experience at the airport. Wouldn’t you like to be escorted, or find your way to a quieter lounge area to wait for your flight? I know I certainly enjoy a quieter experience. If you are a member of an airline loyalty program or lounge program through your credit card, that is a great option for you. If you are not a member that qualifies, ask me when we book your next trip.
Remember, it’s all in the details – and details are the specialty of travel agents. As your Travel Concierge, I take great pride in planning the details, so you have an experience that exceeds your expectation!

Happy Travels,

You Need a Travel Agent!

Recently I was traveling with colleagues. We were a wide variety of ages and the topic of age came up at dinner one night. It came up in the context of how our different ages reflect how we do business differently. Some of us still love our paper trails and talking to everyone. Others in the group seem to have not owned a piece of paper in a decade and communicate mostly through technology. I’m a bit in the middle, I love talking to my clients and suppliers, but don’t use as much paper as I used to… although still considerably more than the millennials in our group. This turned in to the conversation about how we are all seeing more and more millennials seek out our services.

If you are a millennial, sure, you are tech savvy and know all the best websites to book hotels and cruise. But here are some words of advice your parents forgot to tell you: the internet is for looking, a travel agent is for booking. Using a travel advisor doesn’t mean you’ll be on a sightseeing bus with a bunch of tourists following around a guide who is waving a tiny flag. It means knowing that you’ll have a personal advocate supporting you with expert advice and experiences as they make sure you get the best value and help sort out the details if there are last minute changes or things don’t go as planned.

Here are five reasons why a travel advisor is your secret weapon to scoring big with an awesome vacation:

  1. They’re experts and your personal insider. Travel advisors have industry knowledge and experience to help match you with your perfect vacation. Your professional travel advisors spend a great deal of time and money to keep up with the most current industry information. They visit the destinations, attend industry events and conferences, know the key personnel that help ensure your experience exceeds your expectations. In other words, they have “been there and done that”.
Travel advisors are a part of the in-crowd when it comes to getting the best values and special offers. Their connections throughout the travel industry mean you’ll have access to value and services that others may not. Professional travel advisors know when a management change adversely or positively affects a resort. They know when the cruise lines change policies based on date of purchase vs. the date you travel. A professional travel advisor is your insider.
  2. Save time. Don’t spend four weeks planning your one-week vacation. Using a travel agent lets you skip the hassle of searching hundreds of websites for the best prices (which often end up more expensive in the long run) or piecing together all the different legs of your itinerary. If you are a planner and want to be involved in the planning process, that’s perfectly fine. Your travel advisor can streamline the process. One good, well thought out qualifying call or survey, can help the travel advisor present the top 2 or 3 options that meet your criteria.
  3. Your trip, your way. Whether you’re someone who wants everything planned down to the minute or you’re happy with just a hotel reservation and flight to get there, your travel advisor will customize your trip to your preferences, interests and budget.
  4. Groups made easy. Whether it’s a bachelorette party, reunion, “buddymoon” or simply a friends and family getaway, travel advisors take the stress out of planning group vacations. They can handle multiple reservations, arrange transportation from various home bases and ports, book accommodations and offer exclusive group add-ons. Planning a destination wedding? You’ll definitely want to say “I do” to using a travel advisor!
  5. Trust a Professional. Make the most of your vacation investment by working with a travel advisor. You’ll receive a personal touch that cannot be matched by online retailers as well as have an advocate to help you out if any issues may arise. Professional travel advisors know the difference between a great value, good marketing, media hype, or media frenzy.

Happy Travels,

Stress Free Family Travel

With family vacation time quickly upon us, it is not hard to start feeling overwhelmed preparing for the big trip. Whether still in the planning stages or the actual trip preparation stages some simple guidelines can make a big difference.

During the planning process one thing to remember is not to confuse price with value, this often leads to overspending on vacations. Know your vacation budget up front, while it is not always known what a trip may cost, everyone knows what they are willing to spend. Remember to consider all details, not just the cost of “booking the trip” but the anticipated spending in destination as well. Too many times vacationers overspend on vacation for things that could have been purchased at a lower cost during the planning process.

Another key decision in the planning process is to determine if this is a trip “for” the kids, or a trip “with” the kids. These are very different types of vacations. If traveling with small children, check in to family services available on the cruise line or at the resort. Some cruise lines and resorts carry items such as diapers, play pens, etc. and will allow you to reserve items in advance. If traveling domestically, consider shipping items to your destination.

Always take any medical, physical, or dietary special needs in to consideration. Not all hotels, resorts, or cruise lines are equipped to handle all needs. If traveling with an infant or very young children, it is important to keep them in mind when planning the family vacation. For example, most cruise lines and resorts children must be fully potty trained to be in the pools. Regarding kids’ programs on cruise ships or at resorts, the minimum age is often two or three years old. If anyone in the family has mobility issues, knowing the size of the resort, terrain of the destination, or if the hotels have elevators can be crucial details. Dietary considerations should also be addressed during the planning stages if possible. For example, someone with severe food allergies may run in to issues at resorts that have mostly buffet style food.

Air travel can be exciting yet frustrating when traveling with younger children. Airport security can be quite the process these days. TSA has great information on their website including an entire section about traveling with children that has helpful videos. If traveling with any strollers, car / safety seats, wheelchairs, walkers or any other assistive devices, remember to practice manipulating them before travel. Taking quiet toys for children to play with in the airport and on the plane will help pass the time for them. Always remember to bring ear phones or ear buds for any electronics, other travelers don’t always have the same taste in movies or music. For longer flights, bring child friendly foods that only require boiled water such as Ramen noodles, or macaroni and cheese.

There are a couple of tips that can be helpful regardless of destination or how you are getting there. With the popularity of cell phones these days, no one is ever without a cameral. Each morning I recommend taking a family picture, this can be crucial. If anyone in the family gets separated it can induce immediate panic. In moments of panic, remember something as simple as the color of someone’s shirt seems like a daunting task. If you have a picture to look at, you don’t have to “remember” details. Having a picture on your phone is also helpful as it can be instantly shown or shared to others to assist in a search if needed. Another tip is to always make multiple copies of photo ID’s. Keep a second copy separate from the original and leave another copy behind with someone you trust. Lost ID’s are more common than most people think. Having a copy of your lost ID can streamline the process for getting home if an ID is required to fly or even use a credit card. In some countries it is common practice to see an ID with every credit card transaction.

It’s summer, the most popular vacation season of the year, it’s time to enjoy a stress-free family vacation!

Latest trends in travel

Have you heard the saying, go big or go home? Last month we hit a big milestone, our 25th wedding anniversary! We always knew we would get there, and now we are looking forward to 50. Since it was our 25th, we decided to do something a bit more than our usual dinner, or 4-night getaway somewhere. We decided to hop on a plane, head to Europe for one of our favorite types of vacations, a river cruise. We started our adventure in Prague and ended in Budapest. We were also able to share this great experience with a group of friends and clients (who are now friends).
As a Travel Professional, I’m often asked about the newest or hottest trends in travel. One of the hottest trends in travel right now is river cruising. Many of Europe’s greatest cities are accessible by river, and river cruising is all about the destination. The river cruise ships are smaller than the ocean-going vessels providing a much more intimate environment and travel experience.
I for one thought that this was for the older generation, but I was completely wrong in more ways than one. This new way to cruise is for the adventurous. You are docked right into the heart of the city. You walk on cobblestones. You are eating pho, knockwurst and other traditional foods. You are there to really experience the cultures and sounds of the world. While there are slower paced options available, this is for the more active adults or the “Bucket List” crowd.
Although an increasingly popular and an amazing experience, river cruising is not for everyone. The river cruise ships are not designed with small children in mind; there are no children’s programs, activities or menus available. River cruising can also be a challenge for physically challenged guests as well; the ships are not designed with handicap accessibility for the most part. Many ships have no elevators, or if they do, they may not reach the lower decks on the ship. Cobblestone streets and many stairs throughout Europe can also present challenges.
River Cruising – The pros about going small:
For those only familiar with the rules of big ships, here are three reasons riverboat fanatics come back, time and again, for more.

Dinner

Forget buffet dining with 2,000 strangers. River cruises average 200 passengers or less per boat, so the waitstaff will likely know your name by the end of the first meal (and so will your fellow travelers). The food on river cruises always includes local specialties as well as traditional fare for the less adventurous. Most cruises have one dinner seating time, but you are open to sit wherever you please. Some of the newer ships are starting to introduce alternative dining options, and yes, still included in the cost.

Evening Entertainment

Instead of dance clubs, karaoke, and glitzy Vegas-style reviews, nightlife on river cruises trends toward string quartets, guest lectures on regional history, local entertainment, and staring out at actual scenery, not just a watery horizon. Because of extended port times, you are often also able to go into the town for a local experience. A few years ago, in Cologne we did a “pub crawl”, and this year in Vienna, we attended a Classical Concert.

Extra Costs

The dirty little secrets of ocean cruises? They always charge extra for excursions, and beer and wine costs are on par with pro sports arenas. River cruise lines opt for flat fees up front. Yes, your excursions are included, as are wine and beer with various meals. Each river cruise line has its own version of their inclusive plan. Some lines will include one excursion per port, others will include as many as you can schedule in your port day There are also all-inclusive river cruise lines.
River cruising continues to gain popularity among American travelers. With the wide variety of choices, it can be the perfect option for a first trip to Europe, or your 20th trip to Europe. As this has quickly become one of my favorite types of vacations, I’m sure you’ll hear more about the rivers from me in the future.

Honeymoons made easy

It’s October, that means it’s our anniversary month! I can’t think of our wedding, without thinking of our honeymoon! Our honeymoon is still one of the most treasured memories of our marriage. After all of the wedding planning and stress, it was such a welcomed getaway for just the two of us! At the time, we chose a cruise for our honeymoon, and the love of cruising was born for Steve, and the passion for travel was ignited in me. We honeymooned well before smart phones and camera phones, so we don’t have a lot of pictures, but we have the memories we created.

Honeymoons often take a backseat to the arrangements and plans of the actual wedding, but you owe it to yourself to give honeymoon planning greater and more careful attention. After all, the wedding is mainly for your family and friends. The once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon that follows is a private getaway for you and your new spouse to celebrate your marriage. Though you may spend a portion of your vacation relaxing and reflecting on this major life change, the honeymoon is most of all an opportunity to enjoy being a newlywed, spending quality time with your new spouse, and experiencing a romantic and exciting getaway.

Honeymooners have endless options. Following months of wedding planning, couples often retreat to a luxurious resort that caters to their every need, while others trek to an adventurous escape from their day-to-day lives. Whether it is a beach vacation or a safari, the honeymoon should reflect your joint personality and wishes.

Keep in mind that perfect honeymoons don’t just happen, and planning requires thoughtfulness, patience, careful attention to details, and a lot of decision-making along the way. Working with the right travel concierge that specializes in romance travel can streamline the process, ensure no details are overlooked, and increase your value and experience dramatically.

Before you contact a romance travel specialist, there are a few things you need to consider. Thinking about these key items will help the travel concierge make thoughtful and appropriate recommendations for creating your ideal honeymoon. You may not know the exact answers before contacting your romance travel specialist, but just thinking about them will get you ahead of the planning process. Here are 5 key questions you should ask yourself:

  1. What is your priority for this experience? Think about choosing up to 3 of the following: romance, quiet, activity, adventure, food / wine, culture, tropical beach, or exploring cities. Of course, you could have completely different ideas! Remember this is your honeymoon and your future memories!
  2. Do you have a specific destination in mind or are you looking for someone to help decide? If you do have a destination in mind, what attracts you to that specific destination?
  3. What are your preferred travel dates or window of time? Not everyone travels immediately after the wedding. I have worked with school teachers that postpone honeymoons until summer break, tax preparation personnel that plan around tax deadlines, and couples that have a specific destination but need to wait until that destination is “in season”.
  4. How long do you want to be gone? This can make a big difference on your destination options. For example, you won’t be visiting the south pacific nor doing an African Safari if you can only be gone 5 days.
  5. What is your budget for your honeymoon? While you may not know what “things cost” (I hear this all of the time), you certainly know what you can and / or will spend. A budget isn’t an exact dollar amount but a range. Knowing your budget range upfront can help set realistic expectations and eliminate a great deal of frustration during the planning process. This is usually the hardest part for most couples. A way to make this easier is to consider the following sample ranges: Less than $5,000, $5,000-$7,500, $7,500-$10,000, $10,000-$13,000, and over $13,000.

Once you have thought about these key elements, the real fun begins!! We can then move on to the types of honeymoons: all-inclusive resorts, multi-destination honeymoons, or cruises are just a few of the options! I’m often asked about the most popular honeymoon trends or destinations. Some couples want to be on the cutting edge and stay away from “what everyone else does” and some couples want to do what is “in the moment”. Which kind of couple are you?

Remember, your honeymoon is all about you! You will be starting your life together and creating your very first “married” memories!

Happy Travels,

Happy 2018!

Congrats Kelley!Well, here it is the end of the month and I’m just now here to say Happy New Year! It’s been a crazy month, but a great month and it is ending on a high note. Before I get in to that, I first want to apologize. Like many others, I’m sure you have noticed my blog posts stopped coming quite some time ago. Without boring you with all of the details, I can assure you that no one was happier to see 2018 come around than me! Of course, taking care of my clients who trust me with their hard earned vacation time and dollars was and will always be a priority. I hope you understand and will enjoy my future posts! My Travel Times posts will focus on helpful hints, tips, and travel information. If you have something you would like me to write about, I’m always open to your ideas.

This week, I was once again honored as a Cruise Planners top producing agent for 2017 earning me the 2018 Millionaire Club Status. I can’t thank enough all of those who help me do what I love to do! If it weren’t for my valuable clients trusting me with their vacations and my very patient friends and family putting up with my crazy schedule, I would never earn the accolades… Thank you for letting me be me! Here’s a picture of the balloons Cruise Planners home office sent acknowledging the achievement.

One of the first things I want to remind you about in the new year is to check your passport expiration dates! Did you know that many destinations require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months PAST your date of travel? That’s right! I always try to remind you when you book travel to check your passport expiration, but without fail… someone forgets and we run in to a time crunch. In 2007 legislation was passed that extended the need for passports when traveling internationally. They issued 18 million passports in 2007, which means they expired in 2017. Last year was a busy year for renewals and they expect this year to be no different. International travel is also on the rise again so they are expecting higher numbers for first time passport applications as well.

If you don’t already have a valid passport in your possession, now is the time to do it! There may also be a need to carry a passport for domestic flights in the US in the not too distant future. There are still 9 states that are not in compliance with the Real ID act, those 9 states have been granted an extension until October 2018 to come in to compliance. If they do not, residents of those 9 states will need passports to board a flight. The original effective date was January 22, 2018, but late last year an extension was granted until October 2018.

While you’re reviewing your passport, if you don’t have it already, now is the time to consider the Global Entry program. I love it and can’t imagine traveling without it! Well, I can imagine it because not all of my travel companions have Global Entry so I happily wait for them to clear immigration upon arrival back in to the US. There are also other Department of Homeland Security programs that can help ease the frustration of air travel. TSA PreCheck is another great option I like. NEXUS and SENTRI are 2 more of the programs. I recommend checking and comparing each one to see which suits your needs. The Department of Homeland Security actually has a great trusted traveler program comparison chart on their website.

Another great option for expediting entry back in to the USA is the Mobile Passport App! This app is officially authorized by US Customs and Border Protection. The apps allows you to quickly input your immigration information and breeze through customs at participating airports and cruise ports. It’s a very easy process! You download the app, set up your profile, answer a few questions, submit to CBP, and proceed through the designated Mobile Passport line. It is a real time saver!

I look forward to providing you with more travel tips, hints, and information throughout the year. Don’t forget, if you have any special requests for topics, I’m all ears!

Kelley

My Favorite Apps for Travel

My favorite apps for travel are diverse! They range from helping with flight info, foreign currency and languages, to TSA info and keeping in touch with friends and family. Last month I went over my favorite apps for staying in touch while traveling, so this month I’ll share a few of my favorite general apps for travel. Personally, I have over 30 travel related apps on my phone, but I doubt you really want to hear about them all!

airline-apps

delta-appcontinentalAIRLINE APPS

I always recommend downloading the app for the airline you are traveling! You will have up to the minute info on delays, schedule changes, the ability to check in for your flight, and more. All of the airlines have free apps in your app store. Don’t leave home without them!

tsa-appMyTSA

This app allows you to monitor security check point line wait times and airport delays. You can also post wait times to help other travelers! The app also has a “Can I bring?” section where you can type in a question and get a response. The app is full information that will help make your travels and security screening process smooth! They have a packing section, dress smart section,

TSA Pre√, and more.

packing-pro-appPacking Pro

This is an amazing must have travel app for people that are obsessed with their packing! You can create lists or use templates they have already created; they also have sample packing lists for your reference. You can import / export lists, share lists among devices, print your lists, email your lists, and much more. This is a quick, simple, reliable and completely customizable packing app.

google-translateGoogle Translate

Google translate is a great feature for both desk top computers and as an app on your smartphone. I love this app, and guess what – it’s free! Google Translate will translate around 103 languages by typing! Can you even name 103 languages? I’m not sure I can! You can speak, type, write, or use your camera to take pictures and the app will respond in the target language! One of my favorite features is it will translate 52 languages offline when you have no internet!

xe-currency-appXe Currency

I use Xe Currency on my desktop all of the time checking for currency exchange rates; now I have it as an app too. This is a great tool for travel, both before you leave and during travel. Since currency rates can change daily, this is an excellent option for having the most up to date exchange rates. With the XE Currency App, you can access live exchange rates, view historical charts, and calculate prices on your smartphone or tablet. This is a free app and available on a variety of platforms.

Cruise Planners Mobile App – My Trips (of course I have saved the best for last!)

This app is designed by Cruise Planners exclusively for our clients!

MyTrips is a great option from my website (www.cruisevacationsandmore.com ) or as Cruise Planners Mobile, a mobile app from your app store. It provides you access to your vacation information and allows you to book right from the website or app. It’s an innovative way to have me with you all of the time! You can find a cruise, book your insurance, shore excursions, keep up with some of my social media, share your vacation plans with others and more. Once you have your vacation booked with me, I’ll send you your MyTrips log-in information and you’ll be able to access all sorts of information about your vacation.

I hope you find these apps useful in your travels! What are some of your favorite apps? Reach out and let me know! I always love hearing from you!

Happy Travels,
